The Neighborhoods of San Francisco - Union Square

Union Square itself is bounded by Stockton, Powell, Post and Geary Streets. As a shopping destination it runs at least two blocks out in each direction. In downtown San Francisco, Union Square is the natural destination for shoppers. With Macy's, Nordstrom, Sak's, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Versace, Neiman Marcus and more than 100 other upscale stores, it is San Francisco's answer to New York's Fifth Avenue.

If upscale shopping isn't enough, upscale hotels and restaurants also abound, check out Wolfgang Puck's Postrio's for a 5 star dining experience. After dinner, stop into one of the many art galleries and pick up that Picasso you've been seeking.

This is also the theater district, the A.C.T., Curran, Geary, Golden Gate and Lorraine Hansberry theaters are all easy walking distance from the square.

The Hyde-Powell and Mason-Powell cable car routes run right past Union Square. The cable car turntable is just a couple blocks from the square.

Follow Stockton north a few short blocks to the famous gates of Chinatown.
