The Neighborhoods of San Francisco - The Castro District

The Castro District is the heart of the gay and lesbian community. Indeed, it is known worldwide as "Gay Mecca". Located on upper Market Street, it hosts an energetic collection of boutiques, bookstores, novelty and clothing stores, punctuated by restaurants and bars.

The Castro District takes its name from it's busiest thoroughfare, Castro Street. The landmark Castro Theater is also located here, at 429 Castro Street. This grand, old style movie palace is one of few remaining in America. Aside from its Americana charm the theater is known for their film revivals and preshow concerts on the Wurlizter organ.

Each October the Castro Street Fair features food, arts and crafts along with the popular outdoor dance pavilions. Funds go to charitable causes important to the community.

One of the largest events in the community is the Gay Pride Parade. A spectacle to behold, everyone is welcome. Although it may not be suitable for children.

We recommend visiting at night when the pulse of the community really starts to pound. The neon, the crowds and the music make this a fun and dramatic place to visit.
